Welder Job Description

  • ·Position fabricated components in fit-up jigs and fixtures and use turning rigs where available, or position and clamp components for welding, using care to maintain dimensions in both English and metric; use templates, temporary material stop gauging devices or patterns.
  • ·Work from drawings, sketches, templates, material code charts, etc.
  • ·Use rule, scale, protractor, templates, straight edge, plumb line, and fixed gauges.
  • ·Under general supervision; instructions provided on new work, variations, fit-up, and welding difficulties; worker is responsible for process and final inspection.
  • ·Work requires all necessary preparation work including grinding; torch work may be required, along with forklift operation.
  • ·Per blueprints, set up, tack and weld to produce a quality product. 


Requires a thorough knowledge of welding practices and techniques, equipment types, purposes and applications, and material characteristics, usually acquired through four years of high school and one to two years of vocational trade school, plus three to four years of diversified welding experience. Individual must be capable of reading and working from blueprints and be capable of welding with GMAC, FCAW, and SAW welding procedures. In-house welder qualification tests may be given.
