Position Title: Global Weld Engineer


Position Summary
Manage the development and integration of welding support and direction for Flow Operations in Americas. Provide leadership in welding technology and process development. Drive continuous improvement utilizing state-of-the process for welding and lean thinking. Evaluate opportunities for reductions in manufacturing costs using current and new technologies. This is a hands-on position with no direct reports. This individual will work for the VP, Operations Americas and will support operations in United States, South America and Canada.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Strategic Vision " This individual will be responsible for providing direction in welding technology and integrating state-of-the-practice methodology
• This individual is to review, interpret, understand, and provide guidance, direction, training and training materials to design, engineering, purchasing, manufacturing, and quality control as it relates to Commercial specifications.
• Conducts research and development investigations to develop and test new fabrication processes and procedures.
• Develop and plan sequence of operations and forecast time requirements for welding operations.
• Improve existing or develop new welding equipment, develop new or modify current welding methods, techniques, and procedures, discover new patterns of welding phenomena, or to correlate and substantiate hypotheses.
• Prepares technical reports as a result of research and development and preventive maintenance investigations and documentation to support product manufacturing.
• Work closely with other departments to help develop new products and maintain current products.
• Establishes welding procedures to guide production and welding personnel relating to specification restrictions, material processes, pre- and post-heating requirements which involve use of complex alloys, unusual fabrication methods, welding of critical joints, and complex post heating requirements.
• Evaluates new developments in welding field for possible application to current welding problems or production processes.
• Directs and coordinates technical personnel in performing inspections to ensure workers' compliance with established welding procedures, restrictions, and standards; in testing welds for conformance with national code requirements; or testing welding personnel for certification.
• Contacts personnel of other agencies, engineering personnel, or clients to exchange ideas, information, or offer technical advice concerning welding matters.
• May perform experimental welding to evaluate new equipment, techniques, and materials.
• Troubleshoot welding problems; make recommendations for improvement, equipment and tools, and develop corrective actions.
• Work with purchasing, outside vendors, Quality Control, and Product engineering to approve outside vendors and address quality problems that affect the welding and heat treating process.
• Help in assuring the achievement of the production schedule by providing technical support.
• Perform other assignments and duties as required and/or assigned by the supervisor.


Job Requirements:
This position requires the following skills and attributes:
• BS degree in Weld Engineering or Mechanical Engineering, and 8 years hands-on shop production/manufacturing or field construction experience as a Weld Engineer (prefer related to Pressure Vessels, Valves, Boilers, Tanks, etc.).
• Must have solid background in all aspects of SMAW, SAW, FCAW, GMAW, GTAW weld processes for aluminum, stainless and carbon steel welding and be familiar with code requirements as required.
• Experience in robotic welding a plus.
• Must have good oral and written communication skills. Must be able to communicate technical information and problems in great detail to technical staff.
• Excellent problem solving and trouble shooting skills.
• Must be able to work both independently and in a team environment.
• Responsible for driving multiple improvement programs through to implementation and following up on the results achieved.
• Ability to read and understand engineering drawings, including geometric tolerances.
• A working knowledge of inspection methods and techniques.
• A working knowledge of Lean Manufacturing techniques, standard machine shop equipment and metal working processes
• Familiar with computer programs such as Excel, Word, Access, AutoCAD, etc.

Position Summary: Employee will be responsible for welding structural steel using SMAW (stick), GMAW (MIG), and FCAW (Flux-core) must be proficient in all three processes. Work will be performed at the facility of a major defense contractor. Employee will help build warships such as surface combatants, submarines, and aircraft carriers for the U.S. Navy.
Candidates must pass a criminal background investigation that goes back indefinitely and a drug test. Employees are required to work in a physically demanding environment and may be required to pass a health and fitness examination.
Experience: Qualified candidates must possess at least 4 years welding experience. One year of formal training may be substituted for one year of work experience, pending coordinator approval. Any combination of experience and/or formal training must also be approved by site coordinator.
Required Skills and/or Qualifications: Candidate must have passed an ABS or AWS welding certification test with stick and flux core in the vertical and overhead position at some point in their recent past. Those tests will have to have been bend and /or X-rayed with positive results. Welders will be required to pass fillet and butt weld test using SMAW (stick), GMAW (gas metal arc or MIG), and FCAW (flux-core). Must be proficient with a heating torch and air carbon arc gouging. Welder must also be able to properly use weld gauges.

Job Description:

Performs specialized GTAW welding procedures on metal parts with GTAW welding equipment as specified by layout, welding diagram or work instructions.

Responsibilities:

• Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
• Sets up, fits, and positions parts as required using jigs, fixtures, and clamps along layout marks.
• Performs specialized GTAW welding procedures on a wide range of similar and dissimilar metal alloys, often in small, detailed areas.
• Develops, selects, and maintains consistent welding techniques and processes to ensure maximum weld strength and uniformity.
• Examines weld bead size and other specifications.
• Demonstrates thorough knowledge of welding equipment features and the effects of parameter changes.
• Verifies conformance of finished work piece to specifications.
• Utilizes process control charts to report variances in processes.
• In coordination with Maintenance Department, monitors preventive maintenance on welding equipment.
• Trains, assigns work, and sets up machines for welders of lower classifications.
• Proceeds with minimal supervision.
• Demonstrates thorough knowledge of and conformity to Ace Precision Quality System Work Instruction requirements that govern GTAW welding operations.
• Maintains or exceeds production standards through organization and planning.
• Follows and complies with safety rules, regulations, and work instructions.
• Accurately completes all required documentation.
• Meets attendance policy requirements.
• Contributes to team effort by assisting in areas a needed.






Requirements:

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED) with courses in mechanical drawing, shop mathematics, GTAW welding techniques, material characteristics, and structural fundamentals.
• Requires five or more years of GTAW welding and related trades experience to acquire sufficient background in GTAW welding techniques, and/or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
• Must maintain certification on all joint configurations on high temperature alloys and aluminum. Must pass a butt and fillet welding test on .032 material thickness on Inconel, Cobolt, and Nickel (Inconel 718, 347 Stainless, Haynes 188). Must pass a butt and fillet welding test on .020 material thickness on 718 Inconel and a 6061 Aluminum butt and fillet welding test on material thickness of .020-.090. Must pass a Jetline Semi-automatic butt weld test.
• Requires familiarity with weld symbols per AWS A2.4 Symbols for Welding and AWS A3.0 Standard Welding Terms and Definitions.
• Ability to apply shop mathematics, interpret complicated and involved drawings, specifications, formulas, and demonstrates competence in use of precision measuring instruments.
• Ability to pass vision exam requirements.
