Summary Description: Under general supervision, using available equipment, and commensurate with experience, performs welding, assembly, grinding and chipping operationswith efficiency and quality as specified by written or verbal order.

Duties/Responsibilities: Welds metal parts using one or all of the following types of available welding equipment. GMAW, SMAW, GTAW, FCAW and SAW. Welding mode could be short circuit, spray transfer or pulsed spray. Positions parts in jigs and fixtures, on bench or floor, or clamps parts together on layout marls. Selects welding method, wire/rodgas mixture, and or angle to base metal and manually guides along weld joint, applying filler material to molten area to form weld. Examines weld for proper bead size and other specifications. Repairs broken or cracked metal parts, fills holes, and builds up metal parts. May layout, position, and tack weld workpieces. May weld along vertical and overhead weld lines. May scarf or groove with oxy-fuel hand torch prior to applying filler metal. May chip or grind off excess weld, slag or spatter. May clean or degrease parts using wire brush, portable grinder, or chemical bath. May cut parts or shapes using gas torch or plasma torch.

Employment Standards: Education/Experience

Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:

Successful completion of 12th grade; and
One year?s experience performing welding duties; or
Successful completion of one-two years of vo-tech training.


Knowledge: Fundamental tools, practices, maintenance, and procedures to prepare and weld a variety of metals and joints; Standard safety rules and regulations governing normal productsand chemicals of the industry.

Skill: Understanding and carrying out oral and written instructions; paying attention to detail; insuring quality and appearance of every completed assembly; operating and maintaininga variety of welding and other equipment; preparing surfaces and joints for welding; setting work priorities, working independently in the absence of a supervisor; establishing and maintainingcooperative working relationships with those contacted on a day to day basis; lifting heavy loads of 100 pounds or more; using avaialbel hoists, cranes jacks and forks lifts to move, raise, lower or position a variety or parts and assemblies.
