Position Title: Global Weld Engineer
Position Summary
Manage the development and integration of welding support and direction for Flow Operations in Americas. Provide leadership in welding technology and process development. Drive continuous improvement utilizing state-of-the process for welding and lean thinking. Evaluate opportunities for reductions in manufacturing costs using current and new technologies. This is a hands-on position with no direct reports. This individual will work for the VP, Operations Americas and will support operations in United States, South America and Canada.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Strategic Vision " This individual will be responsible for providing direction in welding technology and integrating state-of-the-practice methodology
• This individual is to review, interpret, understand, and provide guidance, direction, training and training materials to design, engineering, purchasing, manufacturing, and quality control as it relates to Commercial specifications.
• Conducts research and development investigations to develop and test new fabrication processes and procedures.
• Develop and plan sequence of operations and forecast time requirements for welding operations.
• Improve existing or develop new welding equipment, develop new or modify current welding methods, techniques, and procedures, discover new patterns of welding phenomena, or to correlate and substantiate hypotheses.
• Prepares technical reports as a result of research and development and preventive maintenance investigations and documentation to support product manufacturing.
• Work closely with other departments to help develop new products and maintain current products.
• Establishes welding procedures to guide production and welding personnel relating to specification restrictions, material processes, pre- and post-heating requirements which involve use of complex alloys, unusual fabrication methods, welding of critical joints, and complex post heating requirements.
• Evaluates new developments in welding field for possible application to current welding problems or production processes.
• Directs and coordinates technical personnel in performing inspections to ensure workers' compliance with established welding procedures, restrictions, and standards; in testing welds for conformance with national code requirements; or testing welding personnel for certification.
• Contacts personnel of other agencies, engineering personnel, or clients to exchange ideas, information, or offer technical advice concerning welding matters.
• May perform experimental welding to evaluate new equipment, techniques, and materials.
• Troubleshoot welding problems; make recommendations for improvement, equipment and tools, and develop corrective actions.
• Work with purchasing, outside vendors, Quality Control, and Product engineering to approve outside vendors and address quality problems that affect the welding and heat treating process.
• Help in assuring the achievement of the production schedule by providing technical support.
• Perform other assignments and duties as required and/or assigned by the supervisor.
Job Requirements:
This position requires the following skills and attributes:
• BS degree in Weld Engineering or Mechanical Engineering, and 8 years hands-on shop production/manufacturing or field construction experience as a Weld Engineer (prefer related to Pressure Vessels, Valves, Boilers, Tanks, etc.).
• Must have solid background in all aspects of SMAW, SAW, FCAW, GMAW, GTAW weld processes for aluminum, stainless and carbon steel welding and be familiar with code requirements as required.
• Experience in robotic welding a plus.
• Must have good oral and written communication skills. Must be able to communicate technical information and problems in great detail to technical staff.
• Excellent problem solving and trouble shooting skills.
• Must be able to work both independently and in a team environment.
• Responsible for driving multiple improvement programs through to implementation and following up on the results achieved.
• Ability to read and understand engineering drawings, including geometric tolerances.
• A working knowledge of inspection methods and techniques.
• A working knowledge of Lean Manufacturing techniques, standard machine shop equipment and metal working processes
• Familiar with computer programs such as Excel, Word, Access, AutoCAD, etc.
