WELDER/LAYOUT

Requires specialized training to weld various metals utilizing a full range of welding processes. Requires the ability, skills and experience in various welding processes to make welds that will pass x-ray inspection. Shall be able to successfully pass all required qualification tests. Must be able to assemble weld fabrications and weld them as required. Requires a working knowledge of shop mathematics and properties of materials. Lays out, assembles, and welds the required parts to produce weldments. Repairs and salvages foundry castings. Welds various metals utilizing a full range of welding processes. Requires ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and knowledge of welding procedures and shop math. Must be able to set up work to complete layout assembly operations. Requires ability, skills and experience in welding processes to make welds that will pass x-ray quality inspection and successfully pass all qualification tests.

Responsibilities:
1. Performs layout work of maximum complexity.
2. Dimensionally inspects all component parts and assemblies to establish capability of meeting fabrication requirements and perform air testing for leaks.
3. Makes all necessary templates as required.
4. Performs forming, straightening, grinding operations as necessary to meet drawing requirements.
5. Works from engineering drawings, written or oral instruction, operations sheets, process sheets and all project specifications.
6. Weld all types of material on production, maintenance, salvage and repair operations, utilizing a full range of welding processes, and welding equipment. Must be able to pass all necessary tests as applicable.
7. Positions the piece to be welded on a welding positioner, turning roll or other fixture as the welding procedure requires and performs all position of welding.
8. May perform hard facing, gas welding, brazing, soldering, gouging and rewelding for straightening, burning, arc air gouging, deslagging, descaling, local heat treatment and salvage welding as required of machine parts in and out of the weld department.
9. Works with Material Handling personnel in loading, attaching, detaching and unloading fixtures and positioners.
10. Normally works independently and gives guidance and assistance to lower classified employees as required.
11. Performs related work as assigned.
Equipment / Materials:
Uses all types of welding equipment, welding fixtures, manipulating equipment and positioners, slag hammers, arc air gougers, chipping hammers, portable grinders, pedestal grinders, hack saws, band saws, abrasive cutoff discs, hand trucks, overhead hoists, various powered hand tools including wrenches, various measuring instruments, i.e. inside and outside calipers, dividers, scales, tapes, squares, surface gauge, radius gauges and layout table. May use dollies, ladders and crucibles. Utilizes materials including welding rod, flux, wire, gases, rough castings consisting of all types of materials. Various types of raw stock, i.e. steel, stainless steel, brass, bronze, aluminum, iron, wood and plastic.
